Book design guide
A well-designed book starts with the technical foundation. From page layout and typography to bleed and cover design — discover the six essential elements for a professional result.
1. Page layout, margins & white space
The page layout determines how text and images appear on the page. Correct margins (top, bottom, inner, outer) ensure reading comfort and a professional look. Inner margins should be wider than outer margins so text doesn't disappear into the spine. White space gives the eyes rest and makes the book pleasant to read.
2. Typography
The choice of typeface greatly affects readability and atmosphere. For novels and non-fiction, a serif typeface (like Garamond or Minion) works best. For modern or business books, a sans-serif (like Helvetica) fits better. Pay attention to x-height, letter spacing and line spacing for optimal reading comfort.
3. Page numbering & chapter layout
Chapters traditionally start on a right-hand page (recto). Use consistent page numbering, preferably at the bottom of the page. Title pages, colophon and blank pages are counted but not numbered. A clear chapter layout with white space above the title gives the book a professional look.
4. Bleed, trim & print margins
Every book needs at least 3mm bleed on all sides. This means background colors and images extend 3mm beyond the trim line, so no white edges appear after cutting. This applies to both interior pages and the cover. Also maintain at least 5mm safe margin for text and important elements.
5. Spine thickness & formats
Your book's spine thickness depends on the number of pages and paper type. This is essential for correctly designing the cover. Use our spine thickness calculator to determine the exact thickness. Choose a format that suits your book type: portrait (A5, B5) for novels, landscape for photo books, or square for art books.
6. Cover design
The cover is your book's calling card. Ensure a minimum resolution of 300 DPI for sharp prints. Work in CMYK color profile (not RGB) to avoid color differences. The cover consists of front, spine and back — including bleed. Don't forget the barcode and ISBN on the back. Good design combines attractiveness with technical precision.
Summary
Professional book design is about the right balance between aesthetics and technique. Correct margins, thoughtful typography, consistent page numbering, sufficient bleed, accurate spine thickness and a well-prepared cover design together form the foundation for print-quality books.
